October Means Aspens

We are on a short trip to see the colors in the Eastern Sierra. Today was mainly getting to our current location, although we stopped a couple of times. The drive was sort of uneventful, but there were a few bad drivers out there and I was glad I wasn’t driving! (So bad we could have had a serious problem … good thing Dan was quick to respond!)

I was also happy not to be the one to drive over Sonora Pass, but I wish I could have sat in the back behind Dan so I could avoid seeing the drop to my right! Yes, typical me — I did a bit of my little whimpering noises I make when I’m scared. I can’t seem to help myself!

The wind was rather incredible … one time nearly pushing our huge 4Runner to the side of the road! I took a few shots on our drive since I do like to have a record of the drive. Note the gas prices (if you can see that second photo well enough) in Bridgeport!

We took one side trip before getting to the motel, ending at a place we had parked some years back to start a backpack trip. Ah, memories! (The last photo above is from the parking lot there.)

And then there we were in our little motel in Bishop, California. Nothing fancy, and nothing costly either. BUT hey, there’s a (not very good) canvas photo on our wall and Dan knew the image immediately: it’s of Mount Emerson! How ‘bout that. Seems like this room should be free for me, you know? (If you don’t know why I write that … well, my birth name was Emerson.)

After getting situated we walked to find dinner. Bishop isn’t exactly full of fine dining restaurants (hint: there is no “fine dining), but we really didn’t want or need to spend a ton of money. (Knowing we have an upcoming Big Trip I am hoping to keep this trip rather inexpensive.) We walked past a number of places, and finally stopped at the sushi place we’d been at in the past that was surprisingly good. Well … never mind them for tonight or tomorrow: they are closed on Sunday and Monday. So back we walked.

I had read about some place at a bowling alley and spotted that. Really? A bowling alley? Well, yes. The dining room isn’t in the room with the lanes, nor is it in the room with pool tables. We were walked toward the end of the building and there we were. Time to eat.

While sitting there we ended up chatting with a nice couple right near us from Southern California, and a little bit with a Canadian couple behind us as well. You just never know when you might run in to friendly people! Seems to be common all over the world — or at least the parts of the world where we’ve been so far.

We ordered burgers (Dan a “real” burger, and I had a veggie one.) Now this will come as a great shock to anyone reading … unless you’ve read my posts in the past, that is.

I ATE TOO MUCH!

I guess I will never learn. But honestly, I only ordered the veggie burger and it came with fries. It was just far too much food for me. (I think I will skip weighing myself for a week or so after this little adventure of ours.)

Oh … and no food photos. Use your imaginations. 😉

Tomorrow is an early rising day. Not my favorite thing to do, but I will survive. My photographer husband knows the best time to head out!

But now? Time to say goodnight!

Monday, June 15

If I count days from May 5, when we landed at Heathrow, today is day 42 of our trip. (Obviously if I count from May 4, when we left SFO, it’s day 43. I’m going to bet readers could figure that out too. We are all so smart that way.)

I have to acknowledge that we are a people of privilege: so many can’t manage to do a trip like this. So I must remember to be very grateful. I also have to realize that any trip could our last, as we never know what the next day will bring. So again, I’m grateful.

Acknowledgement over ‘n out. But gratefulness is not over ‘n out. Ever.

Once we were dressed we went upstairs to get our coffees. We won’t pay £17 each for a breakfast here, but the coffee is free all day so that was fine by us. We made them (just one of those automatic machines) and took them back to the room with us as we figured out what we were doing.

Once coffee was done and we’d decided on our agenda we headed out. Dan suggested we grab breakfast nearby, so we did that first. Nothing close to £24!

Then it was over to the tube where we went, with one change, all the way to Richmond to visit Kew Gardens. And yes, Dan figured out the directions. Whew!

The Kew Gardens are huge. We obviously couldn’t see everything there, but we did see quite a bit. We went into most, if not all, of the houses … from tropical (so humid) to desert, and in between. The plant life at the garden is pretty amazing. (But their roses aren’t nearly as wonderful as what I find in San Jose, I must say!) We wandered and wandered. At one point we headed toward the “Redwood Grove”. What we found was one redwood (I think Dan said it was a coastal one). That was it! But there were other large-ish trees around. In any case, we spent a whole lot of time at the gardens, and I will just share photos, a video, and leave it at that.

(I’ve now managed to upload more photos and I think that’s enough. No one needs to see all the photos I shoot!)

We did have a nice, inexpensive lunch at the gardens. Exciting, I know.

From there we walked to where a boat would take us all the way to Westminster. It was a nice, relaxing ride, and it felt good to get off our feet for over an hour. We’d never done a Thames boat ride before, and I’m really glad we did this one. I wouldn’t mind taking another going the other direction, but we’ll see if we can fit that in. And yes, more photos without explanation. (I’m feeling tired and feeling a bit discombobulated right now — more on that later.)

Getting off the boat and heading out into the crowds was rather like culture shock. We had been in nature for so many hours and suddenly we could barely move. I’m so glad we aren’t staying anywhere near that area.

It was time for dinner so we went to a pub we’ve now been to twice already. I wanted to be able to go to the bottom floor (two flights down) because I had great memories of eating there on our first trip together to London: that time we met up with Jan and Greg and ate at the same pub! Yummy food was enjoyed.

Then back to the tube for an easy ride and short walk (because we went Dan’s way!) to our hotel.

But now for the tired and discombobulated bit. First of all, we did walk a lot, so of course I’m tired. But when we got back I told Dan I was going to take a shower. I had noticed a paper bath mat sitting on a shelf, but checking the shower floor I thought it wasn’t too slippery. WRONG. I started the shower and almost immediately fell to the floor. That is one dangerous shower. Fortunately nothing was broken and I got that darn paper bath mat and put it on the floor. What a dumb thing, though: it was falling apart by the time I was done showering. I think they should rethink their bath mat idea!

Now it’s time for me to listen to at least one recording I’m to study, and then off to sleepy land.

Friday, May 8 — Our Full Day in Inverness

Finally, sleep is pretty much normal! My “sleep score” on my phone wasn’t terrific, but for some reason the doggone watch and phone are tremendously confused about things. It seemed to now think my bedtime should be 9:00PM. It’s never been that early. Sometimes it the watch is off, sometimes not. I guess both devices have also been suffering with jet lag. Or something.

We didn’t leave our room until after 10:00. Lazy bums!

Speaking of rooms — this place, Aye Stay, is similar to a B&B, but there is not only no second B, but it appears will we never even see the owners. As I mentioned yesterday we entered the house to check in yesterday, we just looked at the list with our name and grab the correct key. Earlier, when we dropped off our luggage, I didn’t know where to put the bags so I buzzed the owners and I was just told over the speaker what to do. I think they live in part of the house, but who knows? It sounds like our supplies will be replenished (I’m hoping they replenish the little package of cookies — I tend to collect those for emergency snacks!) They don’t do much, though. It’s all very impersonal. I’m okay with that, being the introvert I am, but it just feels odd.

Looking out our window, as well as checking the weather app, I could see that we were in for another windy day with temps in the low 50°s. I’m glad that I packed my turtleneck at the last minute! It’s definitely a lot of layers day.

With few plans or ideas of what to do, we did know that first stop was coffee. Dan had found a place nearby that looked good. So after his shower and both of us getting ready, we headed out.

We both had a sweet roll (which is much tastier than a sweat roll which was what I first typed) and coffee. The Bakery was a nice little spot!

Then we walked toward the River Ness, to go visit the Ness Islands I’d read about (and where we had headed yesterday, but ended up returning before we arrived there).

The Ness Islands were lovely. While there we met a couple who chatted with us for a while, which was also lovely. They live in Scotland, although the man was originally from South Africa. They had visited the United States so we enjoyed hearing about their travels.

But back to the Islands … just gorgeous!

Saw this poster for Parsifal, too.

Then we went to the Botanic Gardens for a brief while. (Thank you, Dan, for tolerating my flower love!)

Normally we don’t eat lunch if we have a good breakfast, but while the sweet rolls were tasty we decided we should actually have a decent meal. If you can call what we chose decent! But hey, we had been to the Victorian Market yesterday and had said we’d return for lunch, so what could one do but stick to what we said.

After lunch we attempted to find a map of some areas we will be visiting. Climbing some steps, we landed at what looked to be mostly a children’s bookstore, but there was a map of all of Scotland so we did pick that up.

The bookstore is at the top of these stairs.

Then some more walking took place, passing this interesting building (I remember it from our first visit).

We had to go into Leakey’s Book Shop, having seen it mentioned numerous times.

From there we walked by The Hootananny, which had been recommended to us back in 2023 when we took our Great Glen Way Walk, so I checked and (hooray!) we could make a reservation. But that meant there wasn’t enough time to go back to our lodging for any meaningful amount of time so … okay … don’t tell anyone … we stopped at a place to have a beer. Mind you, it was merely to take up time. Honest!

Finally it was time for our dinner at Hootananny’s. The person taking us to our table was a bit harsh when I said something about the sound and my bad ear — scared me, in fact. But I guess he’s just that way. He did give us a great table, further away from the musicians. He also told us we had 1 1/2 hours to eat and then we’d have to leave the table. Fine. We could deal.

Or could we? We had placed our orders and while our drinks and appetizer arrived quickly, our dinner did not. The two women next to us got in after us and were served quickly. Hmmm.

Speaking of those women, they had just finished the Great Glen Way walk! We ended up chatting for most of the time we were there. Both live in Arizona and, now both widowed, do tons of traveling.

I finally talked to our server and asked her about our meal and my concern that we now had 20 minutes left. She assured me that we would be able to finish. Meanwhile we listened to the music. I don’t have a clue how the videos will be, but I at least recorded some bits.

And our dinners did finally arrive!

When our server returned and we ordered a dram for after our meal she did tell us we’d have to vacate the table. But by then it had been two hours so we could hardly be upset! So we got our drams and headed downstairs.

While there, some altercation must have happened, as a man was escorted out. I suspect a bit too much to drink, but who knows? I think they have pretty tight security (we saw one guy outside as we left).

We drank and listened a bit more.

I’m glad we made it to the place this time around.

Walking back to our lodging it was really quite nice out.

We spotted some people bowing on our way, and one of the players came and chatted with us a bit. Such a friendly man!

Tomorrow we move to a new destination. I’m close to packed and ready, as I like to set the next day’s clothing out the night before. We just have to go get (GULP!) our rental car. I am betting Dan does the driving as I’m not too excited about driving on the left side of the road.

Goodnight!

Thursday, Homeward Bound

While I slept horribly (my watch nearly reprimands me) yet again, we did not have to wake early. We eventually did rise, and had the breakfast our hotel (Red Roof in Bridgeport — a pretty nice place for the price). Both of us caught up with various things online while we ate, and even after that.

Then it was time to pack the car and make our way home.

We drove briefly into Red Rock Canyon. I was hoping to find the mallow we saw growing all along the highway, but nope, not there. The mountains had a lot of bright yellow flowers, though.

Gas stop was in Tehachapi, where the temperature was twenty degrees lower than Ridgecrest. Yours truly does window washing duty while Dan fills the car. (Too bad I never have the inclination to do that on our house windows!)

I always enjoy the hills by Tehachapi. Today there was a lot of fog and I thought it was lovely. We didn’t stop, though, so no pictures. But the hills were green and the fog made it look a bit magical.

Eventually we stopped in the Central Valley for a bird visit. We didn’t stay long since we still had a bit of a drive, but I snapped a few photos.

And then we were home. Now it’s back to work for me, but my music career is quickly drawing to a close!

Wednesday, Death Valley Trip

Well gee, let’s wake up even 15 minutes earlier, shall we? Yep … 4:15. Painful for this girl, but so it goes.

We got ready, packed up, and Dan loaded the car. Then off we went. Bye bye Beatty.

First stop: Mesquite Dunes. I was surprised to see tons of brown eyed primrose, and another flower I think is another sort of primrose. It’s always amazing to see what can grow in the dunes. I took some shots of the big picture but even more of flowers with my macro lens.

I tend to run out of steam before Dan, and today was no exception: I headed back to the car long before he did. I got a good amount of reading done.

Once Dan returned we went up a gravel road and set up breakfast. Fighter jets roared above us … so much for a quiet breakfast! I shot a few more photos because why not?!

We went to Stovepipe Wells to see if they had a DEVA wildflower book but found nothing. Books must not be popular for tourists.

Then it was goodbye Death Valley.

We decided to go out a different way. The brittlebush was plentiful.

We made our way to Father Crowley Point, where fighter jets practice above what is called Star Wars Canyon.

I walked around to see if I could find flowers. A higher elevation meant fewer flowers, but I did find some. When I went back to Dan he was chatting with a guy. As we stood the younger man pointed … a jet. It flew right past us! The noise was deafening. Dan may have gotten some good shots. Sadly I was just frozen due to the surprise … really shock! … of it all.

We stuck around a good long time but didn’t get another low flying jet.

Driving on Dan opted to take a dirt road detour on the way to Saline Valley.

There were a lot of Joshua trees, and this one was the first we saw.

More dirt road, another tree, among many …

Back to the main road, highway 190. Soon the Sierra Nevada came in to view.

We drove past Owen’s Lake a the tiny town of Olanche, and started looking for a spot to set up lunch. it wasn’t a tremendously scenic spot, and we opted not to get out our chairs and table, but food was eaten.

Next up was a rather ho-hum under one hour drive to our lodging for the night. Hello Ridgecrest.

But OH! A king-size bed is quite welcome, as was a hot shower and change of clothes. I’m a clean machine.

Then it was feet up (clean feet!) and get this blog entry going.

Finally, it was time for dinner. We had a couple of ideas in mind. The first place we were planning on checking out was a French restaurant called Mon Reve. We got there, walked in to see if there was a menu posted, and … well … never mind! We were seated and that was that. Forget the other choice! The server was also, I’m sure, the owner. He did the serving, and his wife, I believe did the cooking. It was just a lovely spot and we really enjoyed a relaxing, end-of-trip meal. (My meal is pictured: salmon and scalloped potatoes.)

Back to our hotel we went, for some reading and rest.

Tomorrow we are homeward bound, although you never know how many detours we might take.

Goodnight!

YESTERDAY AT THE COAST

(This is a posted both here and at my photography site. Not that anyone really cares but I feel the need to point that out because … well … that’s just me!)

We went to the Coast yesterday with Greg (my brother) and Jan (his wife). It’s a favorite place for them, and we had heard that we were in for some pretty crazy surf. It was just a perfect day: not cold, not too windy, yet the waves … well … amazing!

Goin’ Home

Thursday meant we had to head back home. I was sad to leave, but I suppose I’m nearly always sad to head back to the house, even while I think we live in a lovely area. I just enjoy travel so much!

Before going home we did take the June Lake loop. There just wasn’t anything that caused us to stop and pull out the cameras, so one iPhone shot will have to suffice.

We also took a VERY brief detour so Dan could shoot some clouds. I didn’t get my cameras out, but I did shoot a bit with the phone, including a bit of a typo on the sign, as I’m sure you can see.

Then we went over Sonora Pass to get home. We barely stopped, and I only had the phone out for this view.

From there it was only one more stop in the mountains, somewhere near the Dardanelles, and then the obligatory Starbucks gotta-stay-awake bit. Finally, back to the house and back to work.

Wednesday, Continued …

After spending time in our exciting motel room we went back out to shoot around 4 PM. The first spot was one we planned on returning to when it was a bit later and the light would be better, but still, we stopped and I did a bit of shooting.

As you can see, we had color and we had bare trees. I like ’em both!

At this point I think we ran into Charlotte again … or at least close to this time. She was enjoying some water reflections, I think. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with from her travels!

Then I managed to pull out the macro lens, amazingly enough … but those photos will wait for another time, as I might use them for my “daily flora” photos and I don’t like to post things twice!

But what a wonderful day we had, and it was our last full day in the area. Thursday we packed up, but of course that didn’t mean we didn’t stop anywhere, so I’ll post a wee bit more about that later.

Wednesday, October 11, 2023

And now it’s Wednesday … or it was … on Wednesday.

Hah! See how funny I can be? I should be on stage.

But I AM on stage. They just don’t let me talk.

There … funny again.

Okay. I will stop now. Promise.

So let’s move on to Wednesday. I can’t remember now if we woke up early or not. Crazy how I can forget something so awful as an early morning wake-up call, right? But I do know we headed out to spots Dan had chosen. Looking at my iPhone photos it looks like I had moved on to using the Canon more frequently and the phone much less. I guess I’ll have to post some of the Canon (and maybe Fuji if I pulled that out) images in order to really see what I did for Wednesday.

We went to a spot we’ve frequently visited only to be rather disappointed in much of what we saw, and OH was it windy! Still, we managed to do a bit of work (and I’m certain Dan will have much more since he stayed out after I headed back to the car to warm up).

This first photo is using the Canon and a TRIPOD. Yes. I did use a tripod on occasion. (People who know me know that I hesitate using one so much of the time, and when I don’t use it I always regret it later!) Still, with the wind, nothing will be super focused if I zoom in. So it goes.

Now when it’s windy there ARE fun little things to play around with. Like water. Who says everything has to be realistic … right?

These two were on my way back to the car. I kept trying to find something I could manage to shoot! (Then I gave up, got in the car, and turned on the heater for a short while, including the seat warmer, because “happiness is a warm …” um … never mind!)

When Dan got back to the car we went to destination #2. Again, cold and windy. We shot very little. But as you can see, there was certainly color.

There were also spots that made it clear there would be more color to come. (And yes, I do know that green IS a color. You know what I mean … right?

After this we started to drive further in and, lo and behold, there was Charlotte Gibb … and Evan Russel as well. We spent time yakking and verified where we’d meet for brunch.

Dan then acceded to my request to go down a favorite little dirt road, where photography wasn’t all that great, but it just makes my heart happy to drive it … or have HIM drive it, anyway.

After meeting our friends Charlotte, Gary, and Evan for brunch and good times, we went back to our motel since the midday sun isn’t conducive to capturing much of value.

Now you might be dying to know what followed … but it’s dinner time here and I have a concert after that, so I will finish up Wednesday sometime later … stay tuned!

Tuesday, October 10, 2023

Tuesday was moving day: we left Lee Vining, and our destination was Bishop. Of course that doesn’t mean we go directly to Bishop — we couldn’t check in to our hotel until 3:00 PM anyway, but there are also places to visit between the two towns.

Dan always has good ideas about where to go for a sunrise, so we went to one of “his” spots. I had stupidly forgotten to bring my really long lens, so while he used his in this area, I shot different things. I prefer shooting a different direction than Dan in any case: once he aims at something I tend to turn around and do something in the opposite direction! No point doing something that the master photographer is doing, at least much of the time.

Then it was more driving, more exploring …

And yes, those trees in the last image were leaning.

When it was past 3:00 we went to check in to our glamorous (not really) motel in Bishop. Hm. Our room wasn’t ready. But we could still check in, get charged an addition $10 for a “reserve fee” whatever that is, and get our keys. The unavailability of the room wasn’t really a problem, since Dan had said we’d do a “reconnoissance drive” to see where we’d want to be for the next day. So back out we went.

And yes, I really DID take a selfie!

While at the above spot some friends we planned on meeting up with the next day drove past. What a fun surprise to meet up with Charlotte and Gary as we were standing on the side of the road making photos. We chatted a while, agreed where we’d meet for brunch, and said our goodbyes as they went one direction and we went the other.

Yes, we did find color!

We went back, got into our now clean room, and then went to dinner. Another early morning wake-up call meant it was time to hit the hay. But what a lovely day.
